Will I ever be a good writer?
They say the best are those who have no one, hermits, recluses, loners. Everyone they know, dead and gone, all chance of new connections sacrificed. Perhaps, purposely avoided.
I know a lot of people.
I like them. I want to keep them.
I think about and analyze each word, never mind sentence, that I write. It’s hard. Hard to write fiction that may be taken as truth. Is she the sexually abused, the office wallflower, the promiscuous teen…the brokenhearted?
Writing is a risk. People are always going to read into your words….your stories and make them into what they need them to be.
It’s dicey and, it. is. frightening.
But, it is what we’re gifting. Leeway. License. Liberty. Those who know us will get it.
The ice may crack, a bridge might collapse and we could be dealt a crappy hand.
Forget easy eights, but if we’re willing to work a hard six, we may just hit a lucky seven.
Stumbled onto here. It’s so true that writers have to face the reader who may be shocked or dumbfounded by writing. In doing so, though, we always discover more about ourselves~

You ARE a writer. Just write and don’t worry about what anyone’s interpretation is going to be. That’s up to the reader to deal with. I would bet my life that every single writer has struggled with that dilemma, but the successful ones push through it and keep going…no matter what. You need to be in a writers’ group with other authors so you can bounce these issues off them.

My question included the word good. LOL. Yes, a writer’s group would probably be a beneficial thing.

I love that quote! And I loved this post. It is a good question to think about. What am I willing to sacrifice to be a “good writer”? At some point what I will lose will never be able to be made up by the gain of good fiction.

A writer can be ‘good’ by writing without fear. A reader’s interpretation is out of our control. Intention is everything and if you know, in your heart, your intentions come from the right place, what could you lose? That’s the real question I ponder.
Thanks for commenting, Adam. I appreciate it.

I share your desire to become a good writer. One of my struggles with that has been – how do you define “good”. Published? Earning a living writing? Award-winning? Famous? I’ve decided I’m just going to write, and write, and write some more. Practice may not make perfect – or even “good”, but it will make us better.
Thanks for the post. Also, I love the word play in your blog title.

Another very good question. I think the answer is within ourselves. What do we define as good? When we start wondering if good means published, famous, rich or award-winning, we’re asking what other people think. And, that’s okay! It’s all about what makes us feel like we’re good writers.
I wrote a piece a while back, called; “Forest For the Trees.” It’s one of my favourites. It flowed from my fingertips and made me feel very inspired. But…when I posted it, there was very little reader excitement. That didn’t change my mind. It’s still a fave of mine and I honestly still believe it’s ‘good’ regardless of reader feedback. (which, by the way, I appreciate immensely)
The best part of your comment (besides the fact that you commented!!) is the part where you say; “I’ve decided I’m just going to write, and write, and write some more.” …because that’s what it’s all about; writing, believing, enjoying…living the dream. As long as it’s our dream.
